I refrain from posting links to other sites, but the following site has provided endless thought provocing examples of the human condition. Some maybe rash , others self-indulgent filled with displaced blame and unresolved issues that probably need professional help not a website for frustrated artist...anyhow here is..

I got your Cinco-De-Mayo right here!

I am of Mexican / American heritage. Frankly never thought much about it, still don't. I'm fair skinned, don't speak Spanish very well, just border slang. Don't get me wrong I am very proud to be of mixed heritage but it is not a race! Black is a race, Asian is a race!  My mom would slap you silly if you told her she is not White! My mother is fluent in Spanish and still has a faint, totally endearing accent that is El Paso to the core. But she is American and proud to be so! But that accent is always there.... I'll be in a store or at a show and I'll hear it, the very distinctive El Paso accent, its different then say a Brownsville or Corpus Spanish accent. Slow with differing emphasis on syllables hard to describe but unmistakable. I don't think I have it any more, I've been away too long, hell I say "Y'all" and "Howdy" on the daily. I miss somethings about my "home-town" ( friends/Family) but mostly it's just memories from 20 years or so of learning the ropes in a Border town!

You might be thinking "man this is gonna be one of those back-in-the-day" posts well yeah it is, but let me start by saying Cinco-De Mayo is a holiday for beer companies! Even in El Paso the most Mexican city in America, C-D-M was just another day, no day off no street party! Even in Mexico it is not that big a deal!
It kinda reminds me of St. Patricks Day! The true meaning lost, replaced with beer specials and 2 for 1 tacos! I mean does some dude in St.Paul or even Dallas know what C-D-Mayo is?  Well I do and here is it in a nut shell and you can tell someone over a Corona and nachos!

So Mexico, as is it's wont had just been through a couple wars, one with us ( U.S.A./ Texas), a Civil War, and another war called the Reform War(?) So needless to say they were strapped for cash. Benito Juarez decides to tell his debtors ( mainly France, Spain and England) to fuck off for a couple of years until he and his cronies can come up with some bread! As you can imagine no one tells those 3 bullies to fuck off, especially a former colony in a the "new" world. You think the big three would have learned from the American Revolution, but noooo, a Napoleon was still running the show in France and you know how those little dudes can be so Napoleon the III send an armada to Mexico to a.) get his cash and b.) set up a new French colony in the Americas, because that is what any self respecting-empire-building-tyrant does!  8000 French troops land in Veracruz and proceed to march toward Mexico city....at Puebla they encounter 4000 Mexicans and got their ass handed to them, the end.... well not really the Frenchys actually took over Mexico a year later and ruled the Mexicans for a whole three years until, stop me if you've heard this one before..the good old U.S.A. thought it was time for a regime' change. We sent money and arms and probably an "advisor" or two and rid Mexico and N. America of French food and tongue kissing for the foreseeable future! Let Freedom Ring bitch!

Now we know why they are called tortillas and not crepes!

So C-D-M is celebrated in the USA because we really, really dis-like the french? No it is a marketing tool drenched in stereotype and half-veiled bigotry! Used by big business to push their crap..another guilt tool so white yuppies will think they are helping their brown friends by buying Pace, Tostitos and Tecate or going to Applebees and Target, etc. etc. e...t...c.....

                                                               Proof! What the???

I for one celebrate my heritage daily....by using Salsa ( the sauce, not the dance) everyday, I eat tortillas just about everyday, I cuss in Spanish several times a day, I drink beer in the morning in my underwear! I check mark White-of-Latino-Decent whenever I can! I listen to Santana and Malo! I have a 44 year-old car sitting in the driveway half-disassembled! I am Mexican/American damn it!

How kick ass! Jorge looks like Iommi!

This is bitchin'! Rolie and Shrieve on drums!

I grew up across from the park, the park is a special place for Mexicans, American and Mexican variety! I don't know why, its a cultural thing, I read in a piece about the Lowrider culture once and they claim it goes back to the days when young men would dress up their horses, put on their finest clothes and circle the town square, more or less parading themselves for the chicas..."look at my horse, my fine clothes, I can provide!" Whatever the reason on real holidays like Easter or The Forth of July, the park would be packed! People show up early and stake out some shade and in El Paso that is the most important part you could be on a hill, your floutas and babies could be rolling down it but if you are in the shade you got it made! Anyway so as a kid things were really exciting on said holidays, my love for cars is well chronicled and the park we lived in front of was in the middle of a Lowrider revolution in the early 70s. I'd sit for hours watching the car go by me and my buddies would thumbs up the cool lowriders, 50 Chevy's Bombas with candy and pearl paints and laugh and jeer at the wanna-bes, dudes in beat up station wagons on 13 inch trailer wheels and bags of concrete in the back to make it drag and spark! Only problem with this was that it was sooo crowded that cars wouldn't move to far and sometimes a pissed off dude or his buddy would get out and start to chase us! Scaring the shit out of us and then laugh their asses off! Next time by they'd flip us off and we'd flip them off, even Steven!

First generation Monte Carlos are the epitome of lowrider in the 70s.....

Bombas were fairly rare when I was a kid most were just old cars but when we saw one it was always Primo!

I Love 66/67 Riviera as a kid there was a guy who rolled one around my neighborhood...it was the shit! ( this is from....Japan!) I bet the Japanese celebrate CDM more than Mexico!

If you find a deal on Mexican Beer buy it, buy it cause it is cheap and taste good not cause Walmart says!

Via con dios!

...starts beating like a big bass drum...*

So I recently dug out my drum set after a decade in the shed... frankly I don't know why I let them sit for so long I guess I had shit to do and really have no place for them...I still don't! But I pushed out the Rivi from the garage and set 'em up. And to my great delight....no damage! ( I was sure water had found them!) Even the heads are good, should be replaced and I will when I get some positive cash flow....And so I wiped off the dust, mouse piss and bug juice, I sat on the thrown I've had since like 9th grade found some sticks, literally found a practice pad and two 2B from my teen years! I laid down some decent beats, not great, but if felt awesome a spark of a flame that once burned like a freaking super nova has started to reappear inside me again, it fells good like seeing a friend or hot chick...the rust is slowly fading ,it's like riding a bike!

Mad-Tank seems to have taken a slight interest.... probably curious more than anything but she can put together a proper 4/4 and has a lot of natural rhythm...but she said girls don't play drums! I said the hell they don't...you mean you never heard of Sheila E.? What are you 6? Anyway so on to youtube we ran and I've found some great drummers! Boy/Girl it doesn't matter if you can play you can play! I'm going to guide her and Mia-Tank into music and if they find the love for playing or not I feel it is every parents duty to at least give their child the chance to try an instrument they may love it they may walk away for decades at a time but at least they can say "I can play_______....".

Drums are complex beasts they are humbling and fun they are the Golf of instruments it looks easy but once you are really trying to do well they kick you in the nutz and all drummers regardless if they admit it are insecure by nature. You never hear a drummer say how kick ass they are, that is because there is always someone better, guitar players brag about how awesome they are, drummers pine and worry and never think they are that great, even the greats!

I think it's the fringe pants that make her Kick Ass! Cindy is a freaking genius, now she is married to Carlos Santana, I bet that house is loud!

The incomparable Sheila E. "Glamorous Life"...reprise.

Karen Carpenter, straight rips....if'n ya don't beleive me here is a taste....skip to 1:38 to get to the drumming!

This chick is all over youtube...she plays along with some great drummers and seems to know here away around the kit and the production is first class and she is heavily sponsered... is she a teacher? soft core for dudes with drummer fetishes ( that gives new meaning to "pounding the skins"!)? I found some stuff with her playing with three other hot chicks... get this, playing, chelos and violins.....some sort of band teacher fetish there for sure!

" I no-know"....jury is out 'till I find some original jams! But her she is taking on Danny Carey and Tool, no mean feat!

Israeli chicks are hot....Natalie Portman, ummm Leo DiCaprio's girl...probably some others....here is her site, I'd start in the Gallery and work my way back...oh crap I have a hot-chick-drummer fetish!

"Bitch" by the Stones...like you didn't know! Now that has got me thinking.....is Charlie Watts better than Ringo? mmmmmm no school like old school.....

The aye-wey we were.....

So I've had this idea for doing a post on the club and bar scene back in-da-day ( 80s) in Juarez, Mexico across the border from El Paso, Texas where I was raised into the fine upstanding member of society I am now... I thought "shit it'll be kick ass!"... you know find some pics do a little nostalgic piece throw in some tales of girls, drugs, booze, brawls, music ,you know the usually bit. But do a search on Juarez or Hell Paso for that matter and it is all...literally all Murder and Mayhem! These cartel putos are making blogging hard on a homie!

When I was a little puto, after mass on Sundays we would pack into the Cadillac and we went over the bridge for gas ( it was like 10 cents cheaper) and if you knew my old man he would travel across the state to save 10 cents on a gallon of gas..there were also great restraunts, Mexican Cokes in big ass bottle, fresh breads and tortilla, we might even hit some of the tourist places and pick up a wooden toy. Even some of my moms people lived over there but I don't remember if we ever visited but as I grew up we went over less and less, I don't think my folks have been over the bridge in many years.

Most don't go back! So pack accordingly!

As you may know the shit hits the fan daily in Juarez, now it's always been a rough town, back in Poncho Villas days on back, fuckers were strapped to the gills itching to blast holes in a gringo or fellow mexicans for stealing their horse or whore or tamales whatever... so we always...always went there with radar on full fucking alert! The 80s were no different, you sense something... you walk, you minded your "P"s, "Q"s and double "RR"s. But now it's something entirely differnt and a generation is missing out on cheap beer and girls!

Even Marty knew you had to be packing heat, especially in Rosa's!

You see growing up in this part of country drinkin' is not a passage or transition to boyhood, we just drink, I think mostly to pass the time cause there aint shit to do! And by the time me and my buddies were old enough to step up to the bar we hit it...HARD! No i.d., no problemo, no dinero...you got a problemo, but shit beers were like a buck , with specials all night, we'd get "yards" of tapped Carta Blanca ( big ass glasses in the shape of a boot") for 3 bucks, a case ( that was 20 beerias) of Corona ( when it was still just another Mexican beer) 3 bucks ( $5 without the bottles to deposit)!! So getting ripped was easy but so was getting in a fight! Fights were broke up by "the Federales" as all police were known and those fucker back then didn't give a shit about Cartels, beheadings or getting blown up! They only cared about shakin' down Americas. We took quite a few bucks with us but always had a 10 or 20 stashed in a boot or inside pocket of our leather jackets just in case you needed to slip a cop a few bucks to let you go or your friends go or in my case more then once...a crazy drunk girlfriend!! Now El Paso for the most part has always been an Army town, hell thats why there is a city there in the first place so back in the old days when the beer and tequila flowed and the border was as open and a mexican puta on payday, G.I.s from Ft. Bliss would head to J-Town to get fucked up, blow their pay by plying under-aged,over-dressed Mexican and American gilrs with booze and generally having good/bad fun the way a G.I. is supposed to. Now most were cool as shit and I had many friends who joined up and where doing the same shit in Tijuana or in Germany and other than the hair styles most were just like us, Metal Heads who wanted to get the hell out of Des Moise, Sacramento or Little Rock and ended up in the desert and after cleaning toilets, guns, boots and Humvee all week all they wanted to do was party or fight or both but I don't think I ever wrestled with a GI....I don't think.....

I wrestled this kind of GI several hundred times....sometimes even conscious!

So my memory is not good combine that with the fact that when we actually got over the border it was probably 10,11 o'clock on a Saturday and we were already pretty plowed but I do remember "The English Pub"! It was about a half a block from the bridge it was like the first "American" bar, I say American because there were hundreds of bars and not all took kindly to drunk Americans with their metal musica and trampy girlfriends barging into their sanctuary, there were some locals only places and they simply would not let you in. There were big dance clubs with dress codes and shit this is were the hot chicks were but we could not and did not want to go in there anyway! The English pub was made for metal dudes and chicks. The sign was the Union Jack with "The English Pub" in old english letters that is as english as it got... it was beacon a light at the end of the tunnel, a promise of a good time and bad hangover!

You break a yard they charged you 3 dollars and you were humiliated with a chorus of boos and pinche- weys!
Corona was unheard of 20 something years ago it was cheap and only those in the know drank 'em, like this cat and me and Mr.666!

They had jams going all night, they had the yards of beer, shot specials it was like being at a buddies house except you tipped the bartender and those dudes took care of us! Mr.666 and I became regulars it was were we'd meet our girls our buddies dudes from HS or the neighborhood who we hadn't seen lately. You see Mr.666 a.) speaks the language! b.) knows how to fucking party and that includes getting the bartender as shit faced as everyone else! Anyway with some cash and booze they would play what we wanted played The Rods,Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Maiden,Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead, Krokus, Y&T, early Scorpions, UFO, Mercyful Fate, Anthrax, all the stuff we loved.

I had a love/hate with these guys....not sure why? I like them more now.....

Y&T....yeah they dress faggy but Dave straight rips! Plus bonus mids 80s drum solo!

This place sat like 20 people in the four or five booths on the left side of the room ( it was rectaglar room like 40 x 15 feet) with the bar to the right, the bar was a long as the place so it was long as shit that place must have packed in 150 people a total fire hazard! There was a toliet I guess there was bowl, but damned it i'd be taking a crap in a bar in J-Town you might as well inject a virus into your ass! The urinal was a concrete trough that was tilted on one end so the gravity took you beer infused piss out into the alley somewhere! The smoke was so thick you could hardly breath, dudes lite up joints right at the bar, it you got there early you could get a booth and you were ruling! It meant you could sit and drink till you spawned fins randon chicks would sit on your lap and let you grop 'em untill their "boyfriends" showed up, I made out with girls I never even spoke one word to just because we had a damn booth can you say MONO! After a few hours of hard partying we'd stumble out on to the street of old J-Town looking for food! Glorious mexican street foods! Oh man Tortas, Tacos, shit that was probably walking the street a few minutes earlier and now was in a tortilla or pan francesas, the tortas were the best, mystery meat with avacado, mayo, grilled onions, chiles, cheese and cheap a buck and some change...oh man drunk food of the first degree with agua fresca ( mexican fruit drinks) to wash it down... oh man! that was some living!

Tacos con gato? The less you know the better! They were damn good!

Torta's Rule! I think we used to eat the dove, which means pigeon in Spanish! Oh and AGUAS!

This is how Juarez was, now it is a war zone with rival factions killing for control, the US state dept. advises against traveling to Mexico and Juarez in particular. To put this into perscective it would be like saying it is not safe to travel from Dallas to Arlington, Jersey to New York, L.A. to Compton....people are cut off from their families it is a tragic state...hopefully with some pressure on the right people change will happen, the cartels will cool it you know sell dope like a business not a god damn Robert Rodriguez movie and the young men and women of El Paso can go over the border in peace to get shitty drunk on mexican beer , have a torta, and bring home stories of lost memory, lost love, lost money, lost dignity or in Mr.666's case a lost car and 24 hours in one of the most notorious jails in the world! But that is a whole other story of inebrieation, fist fights, police corruption and the worst hangover of my life all in the pursuit of another case of Corona and a bottle of Oso Negro!

Cars!

Been away from the PC for a few days and been hitting the books....I will try and stay up to date on ESG... so come back! Stay awhile....

Cars are most guys first true love..I am no exception, in fact it was love at first sight and I'm still head over heels...

Preadolescence brings the first inclining's; the stirring in the body, mind and soul of what will someday be a raging passion and obsession! Hell, as young boys we are sat behind the wheel, steering the family truck-ster and given dozens upon dozens of Hot Wheels, Matchboxes and Tonkas....we make "RRRRRRR" sounds and screeching/chripy tire sounds on our Big Wheels! Speed Racer....Racer X, The Batmobile, The Munsters, Get Smart, hell even Scooby-Doo had the Mystery Machine all jacked up in the back! KICK ASS!

Shaggy & friends in the Shaggin' Wagon!
Menag'e a-five!

Then there was 70's prime time Starsky's Gran Torino, Jim Rockford's Firebird, Farah's Cobra II, Vega$...dude Dan Tanna ( Robert Urich) in a '57 T-Bird...etc. etc.

Not the best looking Ford, but when Hutch slapped the magnet-siren on the the roof and Starsky  nailed it! Wooohooo it was good times!

The Networks all had a Movie night so we got to see movies that had come out in the late 60's and early 70s right on our TV. I still remember seeing Gene Hackman tearing around New York as "Popeye" Doyle in William Friedkin's masterpiece "The French Connection"! And there I was a kid sitting on the couch absolutely riveted, I had no clue about international drug cartels or smack, good guys, bad guys, bad-good guys and none of that shit mattered. What I did understand is that if you drive a 1971 Pontiac Le-mans at high speeds through the crowded streets of Brooklyn it is KICK ASS

                                                                 EPIC!

Bullit, The Cannonball Run, Death Race 2000,American Graffiti, Smokey and the Bandit ( Bert F'ng Reynolds!) Man great movies with big time movie stars playing second fiddle to the cars. Bullit without the car chase would still be a great film, but it is simply unimaginable to not have Steve McQueen ripping around San Francisco in the fastback GT 'Stang hold off the bad guys in their 440Charger! Cannonball and Death Race are both car movies with people in them for the occasional boob shot! Otherwise it is cars, cars, cars. American Graffiti is simply one of the great coming of age movies ever, the list of future Hollywood heavies is endless and the cars timeless. Milner's Deuce, Harrison's 55 Chevy, Steve/Toad's 58 Impala, Suzanne Summer's in a '56 T-Bird..The Pharaohs '49 Merc!

I will have a fire chicken T/A one day...oh yes it will be mine...

Milner was Fonzie before Fonzie was cool!

Black Edwards gave us1965's The Great Race with get this...Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk and the stunning Natalie Wood and tons of turn of the century cars, well Hollywood cars but still. I loved this film as a kid it was a circle it in the TV guide kinda flick for us and as most all things in my life and this blog it comes back to "pops" a whole blog could be dedicated to just the topic of my dad and automobiles he has owned so many over his some 60 years behind the wheel that I don't think he can remember them all.

                                                    Professor Fate's Car
                                                   The Great Leslie's car
My first family car that I remember (besides the two he has had since before I even was born) was a red olds like a '68 Detla 88 or was it a Cutlass? Then there was the Cadillacs, a 72 Sedan De'ville Green and bigger than a bus....I remember sleeping on the tranny hump on the back seat floor board....no car seats for us!

The 73 Eldorado, Silver w/a hood that went on forever etc. etc. There was the '78 Econoline 250 Van! 20 Feet of rolling party pad! We borrowed it heavily during the late 80s early 90s for camping and concerts it held tons of beer and chicks and we never ran out of either! KICK ASS!It was a blast and drove like a dream.

I've gone over the cars in my life before on ESG but that was all good shit here is some bad...they were all hot attractive ladies that I managed to damage one way or another, but they exacted their revenge and hurt me back real bad....

my '67 Riviera I still have she is in the garage recovering from the time I slammed her into an old lady in a Toyota on Burnet and 45th Street...I cried as soon as the wrecker drove off...as god is my witness she'll stay with me and again be cruising the highways as only a 44 year old Buick with a 430 under the hood can!

my '67 Camaro convertible I managed to slam into a parked car on the freeway way back in '87....fixed her but she was never quite the same, after years of storage, I sold her for 8 Grand back in 2000, I could make twice that now....I cried for hours after they towed her to a restorer in Oregon, I bet she's on the show circuit by now....

My '69 Camaro...I had for like a month before I hit a guy walking across the street! Now this dude was a shit faced bum who was intent on getting a sponge bath and a hospital tray full of food! I was heading for work, swing shift on a Saturday evening , this fucker saw me and I saw him, he simply stepped in front of me I was going about 40 slammed on the breaks and skidded right into him he bounced off my hood and flew in the air about 10 feet and rolled another 20...I thought I killed his ass! I mean I never want to feel that again! I cried that day because I thought I had actually killed someone but when I call the hospital later that night he'd already checked himself out and was back chugging Night Train or M/D 20/20 with the homies! The '69 stayed with me through some milstone phases in my life, I drove out of my home town to a new life in Austin, courted ( if that is the right word) my wife in that car had some amazing times in her. I drove her into the ground had a new engine put in her and then...it happened....the Fire of 2000....I was leaving work on a friday...I had money in the bank, was newly wed with a house and bitchin car, good job...on top of the world...she spuddered upon start up but I figured hell it's time for a tune up so I pull onto 183 and she stumbles and I can see flames under the hood throught the scoop ( it's a '69 Camaro so of course she has the scoop)...so I pull over...kill the engine and see the flames getting bigger....I jump out pull the pins..open the hood and.....feed the fire the one thing it really wants..Oxygen! What the hell it was like an explosion!  Me and some construction workers managed to kill the fire with water and one dudes jacket but the damage was done...I never drove her again, the only saving grace is that I sold her to a guy who has become one of my best friends in the world. I was his best man, he has been there when my daughters were born and all because of cars. He sold her at a heavy profit to a dude in Louisiana so who know what happened to her by now...I hope she is well!

I still love cars... domestic, foriegn, old, new. They are the most important invention ever... period... well them and motorcycles but that is a whole other story of lust, love and loss....

PS
